By the Numbers: Seattle Seahawks

Now close to 50 years old, the Seattle Seahawks started playing football in the 1976 season and in 48 seasons they have made three Super Bowl appearances – winning one championship and going 389-363-1 as a franchise. The Seahawks are currently fighting for a spot in the postseason, a place they are used to getting to under head coach Pete Carroll. Here is a look at the Seahawks by the numbers before Thursday night’s showdown against Dallas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

10 – Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll showed up in Seattle for the 2010 season, and in the 13 completed seasons since he took over the franchise has made the playoffs 10 times. That includes two Super Bowl appearances  -- a 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2, 2014, and a 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots the following season in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015. The Seahawks also finished 2018, 2020 and 2022 with a loss in the Wild Card round, and 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2019 with a loss in the Divisional round of the postseason. Carroll is the winningest coach in franchise history, with an overall record of 134-86-1.

15.8 – Seattle wide receiver D.K. Metcalf is having a career year. Now in his fifth season, all with the Seahawks, Metcalf is averaging just under 16 yards per catch, while hauling in 43 passes for 678 yards. While he has just three touchdowns in 10 games, his 15.8 yards per catch average is good enough for fourth best in the NFL this season for receivers with at least 40 catches. He is behind only San Francisco’s Brandon Aiyuk (45 catches/19.6 yards per catch average), Cleveland’s Amari Cooper (45/16.6 ypc) and Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans (48/16.3), and just front of Houston’s Tank Dell (42/15.7). Metcalf’s career average is 14.0 yards per catch, with a best of 15.7 in 2020.

95 – For this version of the Seahawks, kicker Jason Myers is their main point producer with just under 100 this season in 11 games. His 95 points is fifth in the NFL, behind only Cleveland’s Dustin Hopkins (99), Dallas’ Brandon Aubrey (99), Baltimore’s Justin Tucker (98) and San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey (96), and in front of Jacksonville’s Brandon McManus (92). Myers is averaging 8.6 points per game for the Seahawks this season. He has connected on all 20 extra points, and has hit 25 of 31 field goal tries, with four of those misses coming from beyond 50 yards. He has a season long of 55 yards. For his career, Myers is an 85.3-percent field goal kicker, hitting 220 of 258 attempts, and has made 300 of 327 extra-point attempts. He has a career long of 61 yards and has 960 total points scored in his career that has spanned nine seasons – three with Jacksonville (2015-17), one in New York with the Jets (2018) and now in his fifth season in Seattle.

113 – Linebacker Bobby Wagner is now in his 12th season in the NFL, and after a quick 1-year run with the Rams, has returned to his rightful home in the middle of the Seattle defense. That is where he once again leads the way with 113 tackles in 11 games this season. He now owns the franchise records for total tackles with 1,496, ahead of Eugene Robinson (983, 1985-95), K.J. Wright (941, 2011-20), Joe Nash (779, 1982-96) and Chad Brown (743, 1997-2004). While Jordyn Brooks owns the franchise records for tackles in a season with 184, Wagner owns seven of the top 10 spots – second (170 in 2021), third (167 in 2016), fifth (159 in 2019), sixth (140 in 2012), seventh (138 in 2018 & 2020) and 10th (133 in 2017).

3,993 – Seattle quarterback Geno Smith is averaging just 234.9 yards passing per game this season, which is good enough for 16th in the NFL, just behind Green Bay’s Jordan Love (236.3). He is on pace for 3,993 yards this season, which is well behind the franchise-best 4,282 yards he threw for last season. If he continues his current pace, this season will be the sixth best in the history of the Seahawks, behind Russell Wilson’s 4,024 yards in 2015 and just in front of the 3,983 yards Wilson threw for in 2017. Smith is already sixth on the franchise’s all-time passing yards list with 7,601, behind Wilson (37,059 yards/2012-21), Matt Hasselbeck (29,434 yards/2001-10), Dave Krieg (26,132 yards/1980-91), Jim Zorn (20,122 yards/1976-84) and Rick Mirer (9,094 yards/1993-96).

7,675 – With every yard Seattle wide receiver Tyler Lockett earns by catching the football, it moves him that much closer to the top spot on the franchise’s all-time receiving yards list, currently owned by Steve Largent (1976-89) with 13,089 yards. Now in his ninth season with the Seahawks, Lockett has the 7,675 yards on 587 catches in 138 games. This season, Lockett leads to the team in catches with 54, on 79 targets, but for just 575 yards. That is an 888-yard pace for the season, which would be his lowest output since he caught 45 passes for 555 yards in 2017. He is currently averaging 10.6 yards per catch this season, which would be the second lowest of his career, behind only 2020 when he set the franchise single season record with 100 catches but averaged only 10.5 yards per grab.
