Cowboys Coverage 2023: New Place, Same Face

Welcome to my Dallas Cowboys coverage for the 2023-24 season.

In the words of 5-11, 5-11 and 5-11 head coach Dave Campo, “Let’s have some football!”

Last year I covered the Cowboys for Gallery.com, but in the offseason the site went belly up. That’s what happens when the owner, a furniture mogul, and his son, a marketer for dad, think they know more about running a sports web site, than the people they hire to run it. So, here we are today. I have the same access. The same want to. So, why not keep going. That’s what’s great about how info is delivered and consumed these days.

So, I’m here to provide the same level of coverage, just from a different web address. I am doing it on my own dime, which with what I got paid last year at the above-mentioned failed web site, it is pretty much a wash. This season, I’m completely in charge of this space. There will be no punches pulled. I call it like I see it. It’s going to be old school sports journalism delivered with the speed of the internet.

What you can expect on game day, for those that are new here, is a set of quick observations just minutes after the game ends. Then, a quick analysis of the game the morning after. Every week there will be a game preview, a notebook and a few different other types of stories and listicles along the way. You will know what head coach Mike McCarthy has to say, as well as offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and special teams coordinator John Fassel, and of course the players.

What you won’t get is much from owner Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, or anybody in the Jones family. No matter what you ask them, they are going to give you an answer that probably has nothing to do with the question asked. I’m not here for that nonsense.

So, let’s focus on the football. Here is to a good 2023 season, with plenty to talk/write about.

I appreciate your clicks.

Familiar Ending to Another Cowboys Season

No matter how good the Cowboys are in the regular season, the playoffs have been another story under head coach Mike McCarthy and the 2023 season was no different. After winning the NFC East, the Cowboys exited the playoffs with a Wild Card round thud of a performance on Sunday. But was the sum of this team really as good as its parts?

COOKS HELPS OFFENSE SING

After last season, the Cowboys knew they needed a deep threat to help open up the passing attack. So, they acquired Brandin Cooks in the offseason, and he has been the missing piece to the offense’s passing game. He has been the perfect complement to CeeDee Lamb as the Cowboys roll into the postseason.

Behind historic seasons from several players, the Dallas Cowboys head into the postseason as the conference’s No. 2 seed and the newly crowned NFC East champions. But they still have areas to overcome to find the kind of success in the postseason that has eluded them for nearly three decades.

Run Game Still Struggling

With a lack of production from the running backs and push from the offensive line, the Cowboys running game has struggled for much of the second half of the season. While the numbers look good, the production from Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle has been down for most of the 2023 season.

Once a strength of the team, the Cowboys offensive line has become a liability over the last few weeks of the season, as the mistakes continue to rise. If they don’t find a fix for the problems, then a deep playoff run is unlikely.
